Players and non-free codecs in Debian GNU / Linux

By

Well, as I said, I will write tips for Debian users newbies. The tip of the post is how to install the codecs and players to play music, videos and multimedia. So come on!

Preparation

Before beginning, we have to make some adjustments in the list of repositories (sources.list remember?) To install the packages owners of multimedia. To do this you need 15 minutinhos (depending on your download rate of course) to run your favorite music.

  1. Open terminal as root (or open a common terminal and log in as administrator using the command su
  2. Run the command: gedit / etc / apt / sources.list
  3. In the last lines copy and add this repository: deb lenny main http://www.debian-multimedia.org
  4. In the repository "deb ftp://ftp.br.debian.org/debian/ lenny main contrib non-free add after contrib.
  5. Save the file and exit Gedit.
  6. Run http://debian-multimedia.org/gpgkey.pub wget-O - | apt-key add - & & apt-get install debian-multimedia-keyring
  7. Upgrade with apt-get update

Installing multimedia packages

Now is the long awaited part! We will install the codecs.

  1. Run the command as root: apt-get install w32codecs gstreamer0.10-lame libdvdcss2
  2. After that, you can install a player of your choice, if you do not know of any.

Some people do not like Totem, which comes installed on Debian, if that is the case I recommend that you install VLC. (Apt-get install vlc)
