Nokia S60: Memory and storage
By Ancillotti
As with other platforms of the current season, the internal memory of devices based on S60 is divided into two blocks: RAM to run programs and Flash memory to store the programs installed.
Most appliances use 128 MB of RAM (which is generally not disclosed in the specifications) with 70 to 80 MB free after boot, which opens a lot of programs comfortably. There are also cases of appliances such as 6120 Classic and 5700 XpressMusic, using only 64 MB of RAM, with only 20 and 18 MB free, respectively, which is little to the current standards.
This portion of memory that is used is permanently occupied by the combination of files and system libraries (which are copied from the Flash memory during the boot) and the memory reserved for the use of the system
The big problem of equipment with little RAM is that the shortage of memory limits the number of applications you can keep open simultaneously, so that in many situations, you need to close some programs before loading others. Ao abrir mais do que 4 ou 6 aplicativos, ou ao acessar alguma página web pesada usando o navegador, você passa a receber as fatídicas mensagens de memória cheia e precisa fechar alguns deles antes de continuar: By opening more than 4 or 6 applications, or accessing any web page using heavy browser, you will receive the fateful messages memory full and needs to close some of them before proceeding:
This is not even a big problem if you have the habit of closing the applications rather than simply return to the menu directly. Otherwise, it is better to directly buy a model with 128 MB of RAM, where the errors are almost nonexistent memory full.
With the fall in the price of memories, it makes much more sense for Nokia to save the RAM, so that models with only 64 MB to disappear from 2009.
Anyway, the RAM is supplemented by more 128 MB or 256 MB of internal Flash memory. Except very few exceptions (such as the E62, which USA 32 MB RAM, 32 MB of Flash and more XOR 128 MB of NAND Flash), the Flash memory is almost always double the RAM, since manufacturers tend to use Flash memory in most models with more RAM . After all, no use to have very much room to install programs if you do not have RAM to run them .
Again, the Flash memory is reserved for the image of the system so that only a portion is available for use. In devices with 256 MB, we generally 110 to 160 MB free (varies according to the version of the system and the number of applications pre-installed), while in the aircraft with only 30 have 128 MB or 40 MB free.
When installing programs, you have the option to install them in internal memory or memory card. My suggestion is that you install the applications most used in the internal memory using the memory card for very heavy applications and / or are rarely used.
The reason is simple: you can not read the contents of the memory card (to connect the smartphone to the PC in order to transfer) as applications installed on the card is opened. It soon becomes inconvenient, since you need to close the applications before it can transfer data to the card, which is not the case with the applications installed in internal memory. A tip is that if you are unable to access the card, and most do not know which application is preventing access, you can simply remove the card (which requires the system to close all applications that are using), then , connect it again.
To install programs, you have two alternatives. The first, and simplest, is to access the download page of the file directly using the browser. When you click the link to download the file, you receive the option to install it:
The second option is to transfer the file to the memory card and
install it using the file manager. A tip is that you keep a copy of the
installation files of all programs installed in a folder on the card.
Thus, you can reinstall them quickly change if the device or to solve a
hard-reset.
The S60 platform's native applications use the
extension. "Sis" or ". SISX," but you can also install applications in
Java, using the extension. "Jar." Thanks to the successful
implementation of the JVM, the S60 smartphones run Java applets with a
good performance, almost as if they were native applications. The only
drawback is that, for reasons of security, the system displays a
confirmation message when the Java applications need to access the web
or read data from card (among other operations), confirmation that you
can not disable.
By default, applications are installed to
the folder "Applications> My aplics." the menu, but you can move
them to the root folder using the "Options> Move w / folder." The
same can be used to rearrange the menus, cleaning the house and leaving
only the applications you really USA in the main folder:
You can start by creating a folder named "trash" (or any other name
inglorious) and move it to the service links, tutorials of welcome and
other shortcuts and links to services you will never use, but also
because they do not remove the image of the system. It is amazing how
the cleaning makes use of the system faster, easier access to the
applications you really use.
Another tip with the S60 is
that, by default, memory cards formatted on the PC (and not in the
smartphone) appear with the name "NO NAME" in the file manager. To
rename the card in devices with the S60 3ed. Go to the "Configutaçs>
Ger. Data> Memory> Options> Name card. I.." In older devices,
the S60 2ed., The option is under "Tools.> Memory> Options>
Name card. Mem.."
