Choking

The choke is a manifestation of the body to expel the food or object that takes a wrong path. At the top of the larynx is located in the epiglottis, which functions as a door that remains open to allow the arrival of air to the lungs and closes when you swallow something, in order to block the passage of food into the lungs and sending it to stomach.

In some cases, the epiglottis fails, the food goes to the larynx and for blocking the passage of air to the lungs and this causes the body to respond with air jets that are sent by the nerve endings of the larynx. The output of food occurs through the mouth or nose and marks the end of choking.

The choke can be very dangerous if the victim is not rescued quickly, because the lack of air can cause death. Why is it important that the person choking cough to expel the food that blocks the epiglottis. If the person can not, we can apply the Heimlich maneuver is the best method to keep the airways open.

In case of choking baby

If you have a baby at home and realizes that he choked on saliva, milk, air or remedy. Throw it in your legs and give energetic slapping hands with the back of the child's back, as shown in photo.

When the choke is with adults

Imagine that a group of friends went to lunch.Suddenly one of them choked up! Try coughing, but seems to be seriously in trouble. Rises and becomes agitated and takes her hands to her throat. Can not talk. It seems to have difficulty breathing. The skin changes color, becoming purplish, there by indicating the low blood oxygenation.

When something blocks the air passage, not enough time to wait for the arrival of medical help. The closest person needs to act quickly!

What to do?

  • The so corrista d eve act immediately, applying 5 slaps between the shoulders.
  • If effect does not appear to apply the Heimlich maneuver!

How to perform the Heimlich maneuver?

1. Stand behind the victim with one foot beside and slightly behind the other and with the same arms to engage the abdomen of the victim;
2. Put your hand closed, below the sternum and slightly above the navelwith the thumb inside against the abdomen of the victim;
3. Firmly grasp the fist with your other hand;
4. Perform 5 abdominal thrusts, in and for the cim in order to increase the pressure on your chest, which will expel the object. Note that each compression should be strong enough to move the obstruction, but not aggressively so as to cause fracture;
5. Reassess the victim, making sure it still has to cough or breathe, making sure the foreign body came out through the mouth;
6. If unsuccessful, repeat the Heimlich maneuver as often as necessary.

If respiratory function is not restored within 3 to 4 minutes, brain activity will cease completely, which can lead to death of the victim.Oxygen is vital for the brain!

So this is it, dear Hubbers! You do not need to stop hanging out with friends or enjoy life for fear of choking, but do not forget to talk or laugh while eating may greatly increase the risk of choking. Always try to chew your food thoroughly before swallowing and eating always unhurried, calm and enjoying the flavors of food.
